Series 2
Organizations, 1871-2009

Scope and Content Note

This series contains yearbooks, programs, reports, handbooks, and other printed material relating to various fraternal organizations, political associations, clubs, and societies from 1871-1996. Items relating to the Masons and groups affiliated with the Masonic Order, including the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Daughters of Isis, Order of the Eastern Star, and Heroines of Jericho, comprise a large part of this series. Many of their yearbooks, reports, addresses, programs, and handbooks relate to chapters in California from the 1960s-1970s. There is also a small collection of political materials, which includes election flyers, brochures, and surveys. Other clubs and societies represented are groups that serve a social or professional function; materials relating to these groups are more recent, primarily from the 1980s. The majority of the organizations represented relate to advancing the rights of minorities and to achieving racial equality. The publications of the organizations reflect their efforts to provide support for defense of human rights, to publicize their activities, and to appeal for support.

A variety of calendars related to organizations are contained in Series 6: Printed ephemera.
