Collection Description
Biographical Note
The Utopian Literary Club was founded in 1916 by a group of African American women in Atlanta, Georgia. Meeting for the simple purpose of "the mental advancement of its members," the Utopian Literary Club is primarily a social club that assembles regularly to discuss literature, listen to lectures and music, and debate current events. The organization also hosts an annual Christmas party and "Party for Friends," a social event opened to non-club members.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the records of the Utopian Literary Club in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1927-2004. The records include minutes, programs, financial reports, photographs, the club constitution, and biographical files of members. The majority of the material is from 1984 to the present, although some historical sketches of early club history are included. The annual yearbook is particularly detailed concerning club activities, listing yearly programs, officers, and the names and addresses of club members. Minutes and committee reports document the business of the Utopian Literary Club, although most are scattered and incomplete.
Arrangement Note
Arranged by document type.
