Collection Description

Biographical Note

Born in Hartsville, South Carolina, Mildred Jordan arrived at Emory in 1931 and was soon after appointed the head of the A. W. Calhoun Medical Library in 1933. She held the title of professor of medical bibliography and taught a special course in medical librarianship beginning in 1951, having previously taught at the Mayo Clinic. A pioneer in the field of medical librarianship, Jordan was the recipient of the Marcia C. Noyes Award in 1964, presented by the Medical Library Association. She was a recognized authority on Georgia medical history, having lectured frequently on the subject. During the course of her career, Jordan published numerous articles on medical librarianship, and was a member of the executive committee of the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association. During World War II, Jordan served as the regional director of the Medical Library Service for the Armed Forces of the United States.

Mildred Jordan died on October 7, 1965.
