Collection Description

Biographical Note

Established after the state of Georgia legalized human cadaver dissection in 1887, the Georgia Anatomical Board's scope and purpose was to effectively secure human remains for distribution to teaching institutions of both medical and dental education, for scientific purposes only. Members of the board included the Professor, Assistant Professor, and Assistant Professor of Anatomy of several selected colleges, along with the Deans or Presidents of these colleges. In 1923, a constitution was enacted through a grant from the Georgia State Legislature, with the purpose of "effectively securing human dead bodies and more equitably distributing the same to genuine teaching institutions of medical and dental education."

Scope and Content Note

The Georgia Anatomical Board papers include both general and financial correspondence mostly between members of the Board and participating academic institutions. Also included is a ledger detailing human cadavers from 1887-1928, which were distributed to the Atlanta Medical College, Southern Medical College, Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons, Atlanta Southern Dental College, and eclectic medical schools in the Atlanta area. Biographical information includes name, age, place of birth and place of death, cause of death, and the medical college where the remains were delivered. Additional materials include a large number of receipts and invoices, checks and checkbook stubs written by the Georgia Anatomical Board, and burial or removal permits from 1915 to 1941.
