Biographical Note
Anderson M. Scruggs (1897-1955) was born February 18, 1897 at West Point, Georgia, and died January 28, 1955 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the son of William Edgar and Tallulah Eugenia (Watson) Scruggs. He married Miss Lelia Smith on November 23, 1921. They had one daughter Eugenia Elizabeth (Mrs. Otis J. White, Jr.). After graduating from Atlanta-Southern Dental College (later the School of Denis try of Emory University) in 1925, Dr. Scruggs, who had a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree, went on to teach there as an associate professor of histology, 1926-1939, associate in bacteriology and pathology, 1936-1944; and professor of dentistry, 1949-1955. Dr. Scruggs was a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a member of the American Dental Association, Georgia Dental Association, North District Dental Association, Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Psi Omega. In addition, he was also a member of the Poetry Society of American, and the Poetry Society of Georgia. Dr. Scruggs's poetry was widely published and appeared in newspapers and magazines such as Harper's Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, The New York Times, and more.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of typed and handwritten poetry (1933-1949, undated), obituary notices, personal information, notes on his poetry, correspondence with his daughter, Eugenia Elizabeth (Mrs. Otis J. White, Jr.), correspondence between his wife, Mrs. Leila Scruggs, and Charles E. White, and a scrapbook put together by Charles E. White. Most typed poems are works submitted for publication. Materials are by or about Scruggs. Personal information includes his draft card.
