Collection Description

Biographical Note

Dr. T. S. Powell founded Southern Medical College in 1878, ten years after the controversy that resulted in Dr. Powell’s resignation from the faculty of the Atlanta Medical College. The institution was chartered on November 21, 1878. In June 1879 the first faculty was elected, and classes began on November 1, 1879. The building was located on Edgewood Avenue near the intersection of what is now Park Place. The Providence Infirmary was opened in 1880 by the college on property adjacent to the school to provide clinical experience for its students. Although Dr. Powell and his colleagues had plans to develop dental, pharmaceutical and law departments, only the dental department actually materialized.

In 1892 Southern Medical College constructed a new building adjacent to the Atlanta Medical College, across the street from Grady Hospital. Their differences were eventually resolved during the six years that the schools operated as neighbors. In 1898 the two schools merged to become the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Southern Medical College consist primarily of historical information and administrative records. The historical information files contain photocopies and typescripts of a variety of promotional pamphlets and newspaper articles reporting on each year’s commencement exercises. Administrative records include the annual announcements, board of trustees’ minutes, the constitution and by-laws for the school, and various other legal and informational documents.
