Collection Description

Biographical Note

By 1892, many of Atlanta’s leading dentists felt that dental education in Georgia should take place in an independent school rather than in one that functioned as a department of a medical school. As a result, the Atlanta Dental College was founded in 1893 with William C. Wardlaw as dean. Wardlaw died soon after his arrival. Dr. William Crenshaw, who held the office until 1915, succeeded him. Dr. Claude N. Hughes served as dean for the following two years. The school existed until 1917 when it combined with the Southern Dental College to form the Atlanta-Southern Dental College.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Atlanta Dental College consist primarily of announcements, along with brief historical information, commencement invitations and programs, memorabilia, and one bound volume of faculty minutes (1893).
