Collection Description

Biographical Note

Atlanta-Southern Dental College began in 1917 with the consolidation of Southern Dental College (1887-1917) and Atlanta Dental College (1893-1917). The faculties combined, with S. W. Foster serving as president, Thomas P. Hinman as dean and C. N. Hughes as registrar and treasurer in addition to their teaching duties. The new school’s admissions requirements included graduation from a four-year high school with 15 college entrance units. Entrance requirements rose steadily from that time until 1944 when Atlanta-Southern merged with Emory University.

Scope and Content Note

The records of Atlanta-Southern Dental College include Board of Trustees minutes, catalogs, subject files and a few photographs. The Board of Trustees minutes (1917; 1926-1944) document the development and continued growth of the school, as well as a major controversy surrounding the creation of a teaching clinic. Area dentists viewed such a clinic as a threat to their private practices and brought suit against the Fifth District Dental Society in 1932. Legal documents (Box 4, folder 9; Box 5, folders 6-7) provide further documentation of this disagreement.

Other records consist of alumni directories including graduates of the early dental schools; the constitution and by-laws of the school; enrollment lists for 1941-1944; financial records; and information about the accelerated course of instruction that was offered during World War II.
