Collection Description

Biographical Note

The origins of the Master of Community Health program at Emory began in 1954 with the arrival of Charles A. LeMaistre, who served as the first Chairman of the Emory Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health. In 1958, Thomas F. Sellers became the next chair of the department, a public health leader in Georgia who trained under Dr. LeMaistre. Partnered with William Marine, Dr. Sellers created a Master of Community Health program, housed in the Department of Preventive Medicine. The program was approved in 1974 by the Emory Board of Trustees. In 1990, the program evolved to the new Rollins School of Public Health, with James Curran as the Dean.

Established in 1990, the Rollins School of Public Health was named after Orville Wayne Rollins, a Georgia native and self-made business entrepreneur. The school is comprised of six departments: Behavioral Sciences/Health Education (BSHE), Biostatistics and Bioinformatics (BIOS), Environmental Health (EH), Epidemiology (EPI), Hubert Department of Global Health (GH), and Health Policy and Management (HPM), as well as an executive Master of Public Health Program (EMPH). The school is closely affiliated with the CDC, in large part due to David Sencer, a founding father of Rollins and director of the CDC from 1966-1977. The David Sencer Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 in his honor. Today, Rollins draws strength from the CDC who provides more than one half of the school's adjunct faculty, and the Carter Center which is involved in international health intervention programs that provide student practicum opportunities. Rollins also shares research activities with the American Cancer Society and international headquarters of the Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE), both based in Atlanta.
