Collection Description

Administrative History

The Turner Environmental Law Clinic at Emory University School of Law was established in 1998 with a Turner Foundation grant. The program offers a practical clinical education to aspiring environmental attorneys. Free legal assistance is provided to individuals, community groups, and nonprofit organizations within the state of Georgia that seek to protect and restore the natural environment for the benefit of the public. The Clinic's clients include, but are not limited to, the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club, the Georgia Conservancy, Trees Atlanta, the Altamaha Riverkeeper, the Georgia Wildlife Federation, and others. In addition to legal, regulatory, and legislative work, an academic study of Cumberland Island was completed in 2001.

The Clinic's Legal Advisory Board functions to offer advice and guidance on the types of issues and matters the Clinic should handle, fund-raising, publicity, public education and other issues, policies, and programs.
