Collection Description

Biographical Note

Dan C. Moore was born in Hancock County, Georgia on May 2, 1915. He taught mathematics at Oxford College at Emory University from 1937-1941. From 1942-1945 he served as a captain in the South Pacific during World War II. Following the war, Moore resumed teaching mathematics at Oxford before moving to Valdosta to teach at Emory at Valdosta from 1946 until the campus closed in 1953. Moore transferred back to Oxford College and remained an instructor of mathematics and physics until 1983. Dan Moore received the Emory University Alumni Association Award of Honor in 1985. He continued to reside in Oxford, Georgia with his wife Noellene J. Moore until his death on October 16, 1999.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of correspondence, notes, minutes, publications and ephemera related to Oxford College and Emory at Valdosta. This collection also includes visual material consisting of photographs glued onto fabric sample cards.

The correspondence consists primarily of personal correspondence between Dan Moore and Sanford Atwood (President, Emory University, 1963-1977), as well as correspondence between Dan Moore and several deans of Oxford College. Correspondence also includes contracts of employment and salary information.

The material related to Oxford College consists of publications, minutes, surveys, proposals, and files spanning over twenty years of Moore’s time at Oxford College. The material related to Emory at Valdosta includes a student directory, event programs, and printed ephemera.

The visual material consists of undated photographs glued onto paperboard fabric sample cards. 46 of the photographs are Methodist ministers. The remaining item is a 1962 inaugural program for the Peabody Science Center at the Women’s College of Georgia, now known as Georgia College and State University.
