Collection Description

Biographical Note

Joseph Edwin Guillebeau, Jr. (1925-2001) was a long time professor of Oxford College of Emory University. Born December 11, 1925 in Barnesville, Georgia, Guillebeau began his career at Oxford in 1954, later becoming one of the first Oxford College faculty to be promoted to the rank of full professor in 1974. Guillebeau directed the Oxford Chorale and taught a range of humanities subjects including music appreciation, drama, painting, and poetry before retiring in 1988. He composed numerous original scores for Oxford College students to perform, and donated several of his paintings to the Oxford College Library. Guillebeau also served as pianist and choir director for Allen Memorial United Methodist Church in Oxford, Georgia, and composed several cantatas for performance by the choir.

Joseph Guillebeau died September 18, 2001. Services were held at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, and he is interred at the Oxford Historical Cemetery.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists mostly of original and photocopied scores composed by Guillebeau, the majority of which are undated. The collection includes several compositions based on works of literature: The Tempest, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Pied Beauty, haiku poems, and also many untitled scores. The collection also includes two church bulletins, a copy of of an Indiana State University Magazine article which mentions Guillebeau, and scores by Alfred Hay Malotte, Felix Mendelssohn, Ernest Rogers, and Richard Wagner.
