Collection Description

Biographical Note

A native Georgian and honor graduate of Emory College, J. William Moncrief earned his Ph.D. in chemistry at Harvard University before becoming an assistant professor of chemistry at Emory University. Moncrief remained in this position before succeeding Bond Fleming as the dean of Oxford College in 1976, becoming the youngest dean in the history of the college at 35 years old. During the next 11 years, Dean Moncrief directed much of his attention to improving college admissions, urging Emory College to take Oxford into consideration in its recruitment efforts. Moncrief lobbied for a process that would automatically refer all students not admitted to Emory College to Oxford, thereby giving Oxford College access to many new graduates.

Many facility projects took place during Dean Moncrief's tenure, including the expansion of Pierce Hall. Dedicated in 1985, it was the first new construction project of an academic facility in 23 years on the Oxford campus. In addition, a major renovation of Seney Hall also took place as well as improvements in Bonnell, Dickey, Dowman and Stone Halls.

Dean Moncrief resigned from his position in 1986 to become an administrator at Presbyterian College. J. William Moncrief died on April 8, 2005.
