Collection Description

Biographical Note

James Warburton (b. 1940) was a professor of Spanish at Oxford College of Emory University from the early 1970s through the mid-1990s. He obtained an AB (1962) and MA (1967) from Middlebury College and completed his PhD at Emory University in 1973. While at Oxford College, he oversaw a study abroad program focused on Spanish speaking cultures. The courses were frequently collaborations with Anthropology and other Humanities faculty. Over the course of two decades, the interim courses (offered during breaks between semesters) took hundreds of Oxford College students to locations throughout central and South America, as well as Spain and Portugal. Warburton also participated in several Desert Geology class trips to the Big Bend National Park region of southwest Texas, as well as national parks and monuments near the Four Corners area of Utah and Arizona.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of photographs taken during study abroad trips from 1975 through 1994, as well as photographs from Oxford College events and parties held throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Among the more notable events documented in the collection are the 1995 inauguration of Emory University president William Chase, Oxford College professor Judy Greer's retirement, and ten years of annual Oxford College Fall Retreats.

Arrangement Note

The collection is arranged chronologically.
