Collection Description

Biographical Note

Born February 18, 1906, in Pineapple, Alabama, John Tate was pastor of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church and Director of Religious Life at Oxford College in Oxford, Georgia, from 1967 until his retirement in 1970. He was a graduate of Birmingham Southern College and Candler School of Theology, Emory University, and served in the North Georgia Conference for over 40 years. Immediately prior to his appointment at Oxford, Tate served as District Superintendent of the LaGrange District for six years, returning as interim District Superintendent in 1977. Tate died in Roanoke, Alabama on August 22, 1997.

Scope and Content Note

The John Tate film collection includes 23 Super 8 film reels with a total running time of 2 hours and 46 minutes. Taken between 1967 and 1973, the majority of the films contain content related to Oxford, Georgia, incuding events at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church and Oxford College. In addition to Rev. Tate and his family, many students, parishoners, and community members can be seen throughout the films.
