Collection Description

Biographical Note

The Emory University Academy was established on the Oxford campus in September 1915 after the incorporation of Emory College with Emory University and the subsequent move to the Atlanta campus. The move was in response to "the need, previously apparent in the South, of a thoroughly equipped Academy, in which boys may be prepared for College or University, in full conformity with the present standard requirements."

In the beginning, the faculty was comprised of a principal, and assistant principal, and three instructors. The total expense for three terms (Fall, Winter, and Spring) was $240, plus books and "washing." 56 students are listed as matriculates for the first year. By 1929, the faculty had grown to a total of nine, the total cost for the school year was $450, and the student roster increased to 129. The academy ceased operation at the end of the 1949-1950 academic year. At this time a four-year junior college which included the last two years of high school had begun on the Oxford campus.
