Collection Description

Historical Note

The Women's Caucus of Candler School of Theology began in the early 1970s. In spring of 1974, the Women's Caucus made several recommendations to the faculty, including raising the percentage of women students and women faculty members, integrating women's studies into the academic curriculum, creating greater representation for women and other minority groups, calling for the use of inclusive language, and establishing more opportunities for dialogue. The Women's Caucus continued to develop goals and to make recommendations in the years that followed. In May of 1978, the Women's Caucus wrote an open letter to the faculty of Candler requesting that "issues concerning women and women's historical role in the church" be better integrated into Candler's curriculum. A push for a Women's Studies Program began in 1988 by the Women's Caucus and the Women's Studies Committee. In the academic year of 1990-1991, Kris Kvam, an Emory Ph.D. student was appointed the part-time director of the Women's Studies Program, the following year Pamela del Couture became the second part-time director and during her leadership (1991-1993), the Women's Studies Program changed its name to the Program for Women in Theology and Ministry. The following directors served in the subsequent years: Belle Miller McMaster (1993-1996), Elaine Swartzentruber (1996-1997), Helen Bruch Pearson, the first full-time director (1997-1999), and then Mary Elizabeth Moore (1999-2008).
