Collection Description

Biographical Note

The Convocation of Canterbury, together with the Convocation of York, creates and modifies cannon law for Church of England. In the 1870's, the Convocation of Canterbury appointed companies, or committees, to create a revision of the Bible that reflected new knowledge of the original Greek text. This was the first revision of the Bible used by the Church of England since 1611. The New Testament was issued in 1881 and the Old Testament was issued in 1884. Together they were published as a revised Bible in 1885.

Scope and Content Note

This volume consists of bound annotated page proofs of the New Testament. It was prepared by a member of the New Testament Revision Committee. The volume contains the Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and the Acts. Lists of the members of the Old and New Testament Revision Companies are bound in the front of the volume. A short summary of the project written by J. W. Blakesley in 1877 is also contained in the volume along with a copy of the resolution charging the two committees with the principles of their task.
