Collection Description

Biographical Note

In the introduction to Stories of the Great Hymns of the Church, Luther D. Wishard describes Silas H. Paine as follows: "A busy official of a corporation of world-wide note, he took time throughout a period of forty years to assemble a large and rare collection of hymn books and also to compile a mass of incidents concerning hymns, their authorship, the causes which gave them birth, and their influence upon lives." An executive at a lubricating plant in the Rockefeller Group, Paine is also remembered for having donated his Silver Bay, NY, property to the YMCA to serve as a conference center for the training and educating of young people in foreign missions.

Scope and Content Note

The collection is mainly comprised of eighteen scrapbooks compiled by Silas H. Paine. The scrapbooks contain sacred poetry and articles pertaining to hymnology taken from numerous publications, including London Magazine, Universal Magazine, Methodist Magazine, Arminian Magazine, and Evangelical Magazine, as well as many actual hymns. Each of these scrapbooks is carefully indexed by Paine. Also in the collection is a manuscript of "Hymn Incidents," which appears to be the preliminary manuscript of a book of hymns published by Paine in the mid-1920s. Of further interest may be the inclusion of numerous engraved portraits of various clergy, including John Wesley, in the back of the volume entitled "Annotations on Laudes Domini & C. B."
