Collection Description
Biographical Note
Luke Timothy Johnson is the Robert W. Woodruff Professor Emeritus of Candler School of Theology, Emory University. He is a leading New Testament scholar and sought after lecturer, speaking across the country and abroad. He has delivered 200 presentations and lectures, and has authored 30 books, 70 scholarly articles, and 100 popular articles. Johnson has directed more than 20 PhD dissertations students throughout his career. His research concerns the literary, moral and religious dimensions of the New Testament, Luke-Acts, the Pastoral Letters, and the Letter of James.
Johnson, born on November 20, 1943, in Park Falls, Wisconsin, was educated in public and parochial schools. He served as a Benedictine monk and priest from 1963-1972. Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Notre Dame Seminary in 1966. After graduating, Johnson earned both his M.Div. from St. Meinrad School of Theology and M.A. in Religious Studies from Indiana University in 1970. Lastly, he received his Ph.D. from Yale University in New Testament in 1976. Johnson’s teaching career began in 1969 at St. Meinrad School of Theology and continued until his retirement from Candler School of Theology in 2016. Since beginning his career Johnson has taught at St. Joseph Seminary, Yale University, Indiana University, and Emory University. Johnson also served as a visiting professor at Gonzaga University, Columbia Theological Seminary, Boston College, Christus Institute on Spirituality, and the University of Notre Dame.
Johnson is a member of The Catholic Biblical Association (CBA), Society for Biblical Literature (SBL), and the Societas Novi Testamenti Studiorum (SNTS). He has also been a part of Colombia New Testament Seminar (1976-1981), Society for Values in Higher Education (1976), and Indiana Academy of Religion (1983-1992). He has also served as an editor on various journals and on numerous committees.
