Biographical Note

E. Brooks Holifield, Charles Howard Candler Professor Emeritus of American Church History in the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, earned his Ph.D. at Yale University. Upon graduating, he taught at Emory from 1969-2011. He won election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011 and accepted three appointments as a research fellow to the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Distinguished in his field for his wide historical range of expertise and diverse methodologies, his research investigates the cultural, social, and religious convergence in American history. His authorial contributions include various reviews, articles, and lectures in addition to several books: The Covenant Sealed: The Development of Puritan Sacramental Theology in Old and New England, 1570-1720, The Gentlemen Theologians: American Theology and Southern Culture, 1795-1860, A History of Pastoral Care in America: From Salvation to Self-Realization, 1570-1970, Health and Medicine in the Methodist Tradition, and Era of Persuasion: American Thought and Culture 1521-1680.

In addition to serving in the United Methodist Church as an ordained elder and frequent lecturer, he received the University Scholar-Teacher Award in 2010, selected by Emory faculty on behalf of The United Methodist Church Board of Higher Education and Ministry.
