Collection Description

Biographical Note

David Howell graduated from Candler School of Theology in 1954 with a Bachelor of Divinity and later spent his career as a minister in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. While a student at Candler, his research interests focused on the history of the Christian Church, theology, and ethics.

Scope and Content Note

The papers consist of David Howell's course papers during his studies at Candler School of Theology, arranged into eight bound volumes according to topic assigned by Howell. The materials are from courses taught by Candler School of Theology professors Claude Thompson, Mack Stokes, Bard Thompson, and W.R. Cannon and include course syllabi and outlines, as well as Howell’s notes, assignments, and exams. The papers provide an extensive glimpse into theological education in the early 1950s.
