Collection Description

Biographical Note

David L. Petersen is the Franklin Nutting Parker Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Candler School of Theology, Emory University. He was brought up in Illinois and was the son and grandson of Presbyterian ministers. Petersen received a bachelor of arts degree in religion from the College of Wooster (1965), then attended Yale Divinity School for his bachelor of divinity degree (1968) and remained at Yale for his PhD (1968-1972), where he completed a dissertation on Israelite prophecy. In 1972, he was ordained in the Presbyterian Church. Petersen taught at the University of Illinois (1972-1983), Iliff School of Theology (1983-2002), and then Candler School of Theology, (2002-2013).

Petersen has written extensively on topics related to the Hebrew Bible (or Old Testament), and much of his work has been centered on sound methodological approaches to biblical interpretation. In addition to authoring significant monographs and articles on the Bible, Petersen has been involved in major editorial projects including the New Interpreter’s Bible (senior Old Testament editor) and the Common English Bible (Old Testament editor).

Scope and Content Note
