Collection Description

Biographical Note

A highly regarded teacher, minister, and administrator in North Georgia, Herchel H. Sheets is a graduate of Berry College and Candler School of Theology, he also received Honorary Doctorate of Divinity degrees from LaGrange College and Union College in Kentucky. Sheets has written extensively throughout his career, with 10 published books and over 400 articles. Among his most recognized works is a comprehensive history of the North Georgia Conference, Methodism in North Georgia, published in 2005. Sheets has also written numerous sermons over his fifty year career as a minister, and has written Sunday School lessons for the Wesleyan Christian Advocate, formerly a newspaper of the North and South Georgia Conference.

Scope and Content Note

Comprising the first 18 boxes of the Herchel Sheets papers is his extensive collection of sermons. Categorized by sermon title, the Lectionary sermons are arranged in original order from time of acquisition and include detailed information on the context of his sermons, including the church where he gave the sermon and when. The remainder of his sermons consist of his earliest sermons dating back to 1947, and sermons arranged alphabetically by sermon title.

In addition to his ministerial career, Sheets also wrote extensively. His writings consists of addresses given by Sheets on various topics including stewardship, spiritual growth and development, church revitalization, and college addresses. Also included are drafts and notes from his book Methodism in North Georgia and writings from the North Georgia Advocate, United Methodist Publishing House, and Wesleyan Christian Advocate.

The remainder of the Herchel Sheets papers consists of office files related to Bible study, Bishop's cabinet records, conference files, Episcopal elections, educational materials, and papers related to the World Methodist Council.
