Collection Description

Biographical Note

E. Clinton Gardner was born August 17, 1920. He attended Vanderbilt University, Yale Divinity School, and Yale University. Before joining the faculty of Candler School of Theology in 1954, Dr. Gardner served as a Chaplain in the U. S. Army during WWII, and was a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at North Carolina State College. Co-founding Candler’s department of Ethics and Society, Dr. Gardner was a professor of Christian Ethics for 36 years. His major publications include: Biblical Faith and Social Ethics (1960), The Church as a Prophetic Community (1967), and Christocentrism in Christian Social Ethics (1983). During his time at Emory, Dr. Gardner also developed an interdisciplinary seminar in which students and faculty from various schools, including business, law, medicine, nursing, and theology, examined current ethical issues. Gardner died on November 26, 2005.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains three series: (1) materials related to the Candler School of Theology faculty forum, (2) the interprofessional seminar led by Gardner, and (3) subject files related to various ethical issues. In the first series are faculty presentations and papers delivered at faculty forums. The second contains notes, reports, and teaching materials related to the interprofessional seminar. The third contains primarily articles and reports pertaining to ethical issues.
