Biographical Note

The Rev. Thomas Cecil Myers (born October 25, 1919) married his wife Elizabeth in 1943 and graduated from Candler School of Theology in 1946. He received his first pastoral assignment at Brookhaven Methodist Church 1944-1951) and afterward served at Trinity Methodist (1951-1954), and then at Sam Jones United Methodist (1954-1959). In 1959, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity by LaGrange College. He pastored Grace United Methodist Church for ten years (1960-1979) before moving to First United Methodist, Athens (1970-1976), and finally retired from Peachtree United Methodist in 1984 to Hartwell, GA. Myers is remembered for instituting policies of racial desegregation in his Atlanta churches as well as for reaching out into the unchurched communities. He authored several books including: Faith for a Time of Storm (1963), Thunder on the Mountain (1965), When Crisis Comes (1967), Happiness is Still Homemade (1969), and Living on Tiptoe: The Healing Power of Love (1972). After a long battle with cancer, Myers died on 16 June 1995 at age 75.
