Collection Description

Historical Note

This collection of postcards contains images of churches, parishes and abbeys in various parts of the United Kingdom, with a small number from France. Though some of the postcards contain writing and postal marks, the vast majority are unused. This collection sheds light on the physical attributes of churches in the United Kingdom and compliments our holdings related to English religious history and the Reverend Gordon Taylor collection of church histories.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains 667 postcards (80 of which have been used), spanning from roughly 1960 to 1990. The images and photographs on the cards include famous and lesser known churches, cathedrals, parishes and abbeys in England, and to a lesser extent, Scotland, Wales, and France.

Arrangement Note

The majority of the postcards are from England. These are organized into nine categories that correspond to the regions of England: East Midlands, East of England, London, North East, North West, South East, South West, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and the Humber. The remainder of the postcards are organized into three categories: Scotland, Wales, France, and Unidentified.
