Collection Description

Biographical Note

Robert Wells John (1919-2006) was born in Milwaukee to William N. and Anna Lux John. He completed his undergraduate degree from Wisconsin State Teachers College-Milwaukee (Wisconsin State College of Milwaukee) and then a master's degree from the University of Michigan. He went on to finish his Ph.D. from the University of Indiana in 1953; his dissertation title was: "A History of School Vocal Instruction." From 1942-1946, during the Second World War, John served in the United States Army. From 1966 to 1985, Robert John was at the University of Georgia as a Professor of Music Education, later chair of the Music Department, and Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences. John's dissertation and his tune book collection are also held by Pitts Theology Library's special collections department.

Scope and Content Note

The materials in this short collection contain Robert John's research notes on music instruction, bibliographies, limited correspondence, notes and inventory of his tune book collection, and a tribute by his family members from February of 2017.
