Collection Description

Biographical Note

Born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1941, Russell Earle Richey earned his B.A. at Wesleyan University in Connecticut before earning advanced degrees at Union Theological Seminary and Princeton University. His professional career began at Drew University in 1969 where he served numerous roles including Professor of Church History and Assistant to the President. In 1986, Richey became the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Research Professor of Church History at Duke University; he later served as Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Professor of Church History from 1992-2000. Following his time at Duke, Richey went to Emory University where he was the Dean and Professor of Church History for the Candler School of Theology. During his time at Emory, Richey also served as the Professor of Church History and the William R. Cannon Distinguished Professor of Church History. Finally in 2011, Richey was named Dean Emeritus of Candler and the William R. Cannon Distinguished Professor of Church History Emeritus; he was also a Research Fellow for the Center for Studies in the Wesleyan Tradition at the Duke University Divinity School.

Scope and Content Note

The Russell E. Richey papers consist of correspondence, papers and essays, course material, and other files detailing his days as a college student at Wesleyan University, Union Theological Seminary, and Princeton University. Comprising most of the collection are his professional papers taken from Drew University, Duke University, and Emory University's Candler School of Theology, including correspondence, course materials from class taught by Richey, commission and North Georgia Conference files, speeches, and faculty files. His personal materials include book reviews, certificates, correspondence, collected printed material, as well as passports and other travel documents.
