Collection Description

Biographical Note

Rex D. Matthews taught Historical Theology at Candler School of Theology from 1982 to 1989, and from 2004 to 2018. His teaching has centered on John Wesley and Methodism, with a particular focus on the life and thought of John Wesley in its 18th-century context. Matthews has served the academy not only as a scholar of Methodism, but as an editor in many venues of academic publishing, having worked full-time in that industry from 1989 to 2003. He has been the senior editor of academic books for Abingdon Press, the managing editor of Methodist Review: A Journal of Wesleyan Studies, and an editorial director for Scholars Press and the Society of Biblical Literature. Having finished a Th.D. in historical theology at Harvard Divinity School in 1986, Matthews has published several books and articles on Wesleyan theology. His experience in publishing has also prompted him to publish his own reflections on the nature and challenges of academic writing. A well-liked professor at Candler School of Theology, Matthews has won multiple teaching awards, including the On Eagle’s Wings award at Candler (2010, 2016) and the Emory Williams Teaching Award (2012), Emory University’s highest honor for teaching.

Scope and Content Note

The Rex Matthews collection at Pitts Theology Library contains several manuscripts, including his unpublished dissertation and several early conference paper manuscripts. Syllabi and reading materials from his courses—ranging from his Theology of Wesley and Methodism course to Con Ed reflection groups—are also included. The archive also contains materials from a handful of events that Matthews managed, as well as some publishing-related correspondence, and a collection of materials Matthews gathered in opposition to the UMC’s controversial Judicial Council Decision 1032.

Arrangement Note

Organized into four series: (1) Correspondence and research materials, (2) Courses, (3) Events, and (4) Manuscripts.
