Collection Description

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of engravings that Pitts Theology Library acquired over a period of several years. Most of the engravings are rather large and have, thus, also been referred to as broadsides. The engravings are nearly all of British origin, with two exceptions: a French cartoon engraving of the body of St. Mary Margaret and "Armée van de Heylige Ligue voor der Jesuiten Monarchy," which is Danish. The last item is accompanied by a draft translation of its inscription into English.

The engravings consist mainly of either engraved portraits of prominent men and women or political cartoons. Among the notable persons depicted in the portraits are William Jones of Nayland, William Huntington, Henry Edward Manning, Edward Irving, Popes Pius VI and IX, Sydney Smith, Michael Solomon Alexander, William Wilberforce, Samuel Parr, Frederick Temple, William Dalrymple Maclagan, and Hannah More. The cartoons in the collection are mostly satirical in nature, and their topics include the Catholic Church, Jesuit priests, missionaries, Methodism, and particular individuals (such as W. E. Gladstone).

Though the earliest engraving is from the 17th century, the majority of the pieces were created in the late 18th century through the 20th century.

Arrangement Note

Organized into two series: A. Engraved portraits; B. Engraved cartoons and illustrations. Arranged alphabetically by subject. Arranged chronologically.
