Scope and Content Note

Contains records from the Council for Clinical Training, a parent organization of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. These records span from 1941 to 1962 and include correspondence, case histories of patients, newspaper clippings, brochures and other materials are included. The bulk of the Council materials is correspondence to and from J. Obert Kempson concerning the inception and development of a pastoral counseling program at the South Carolina State Hospital in Columbia. Correspondents include Seward Hiltner, Robert E. Brinkman, Armen D. Jorjorian, and Frederick Kuether, Jr. Several newspaper clippings and brochures are included among the publicity materials and have been placed with the audiovisual materials. Case histories of patients, many with mental health problems, are also among the Council materials. In an effort to protect the confidentiality of these records, the use of the case histories has been restricted. An alphabetical listing of the case histories is available to authorized users.
