Collection Description
Biographical Note
The Pastoral Care Network for Social Responsibility (PCNSR) had its roots in a caucus convened by Howard J. Clinebell at the annual convention of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors in April 1983. About 50 people met to share concerns about the threat of nuclear war and the relationship between that threat and the emotional and spiritual health of people. An organization called Pastoral Counselors for Social Responsibility was formed, with Clinebell serving as chair. Its goals were to raise awareness of the nuclear threat among pastoral counselors and to develop a network of support through which individuals could actively pursue peace.
In 1984, the Steering Committee of PCSR sought to broaden this network to include members of other pastoral care and counseling organizations. The College of Chaplains had held programs on the nuclear threat at its 1982 and 1983 conventions, and the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education was forming a Task Force on Social Issues. In November 1984 representatives from these and other organizations met in Chicago to form the Pastoral Care Network for Social Responsibility. By 1986, PCNSR included members from the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, the College of Chaplains, the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, the American Protestant Correctional Chaplains Association, the Association for Mental Health Clergy, the Canadian Association for Pastoral Education, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, and the Religion Division of the American Association for Mental Deficiency.
In 1987, PCNSR became part of the International Pastoral Care Network for Social Responsibility (IPCNSR), which was formed at a pastoral counseling conference in Melbourne, Australia.
