Collection Description

Historical Note

The Lahav Research project is an ongoing excavation conducted in the Lahav area of Southern Israel from 1976 to present day. The project originated as part of the Cobb Institute of Archaeology at Mississippi State University, where it was conducted under the direction of Joe D. Seger from 1976 to 1999. Then, for its third stage, the project came under the direction of Oded Borowski at Emory University, where it is currently within its final stages. The project focuses its attention primarily on the site known as Tell Halif, a fortified city ruled by king Hezekiah during the late Iron II period. The project attempted to shed light on the role of Tell Halif in the defensive system of ancient Judah, as well as the economic and political lifestyle of the region during the ninth to seventh centuries BCE. Phase I and II are dedicated to establishing the stratigraphic layout of Tell Halif, and conducting multidisciplinary research on the environment. Stage III, directed by Paul Jacobs, focused on field IV to further investigate the nature of its Iron II artifacts. Phase IV seeks to shed light on the structure of fortified cities, and continues to focus on Halif’s social and economic structure.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains paper records related to the Tell Halif archaeological site, such as field and season reports, registries of found artifacts, and reproductions of photographs of artifacts.

Arrangement Note

The collection is organized into three series: (1) Phase I-II (1976-1987), (2) Phase III (1992-1999), and (3) Phase IV (2007-2016).
