Collection Description

Biographical Note

Briarcliff United Methodist Church (Atlanta, Ga.) was founded in 1960 by Reverend W. Melton McNeill. It was originally referred to as the Briarcliff-Shallowford Methodist Church. The church was housed in temporary lodgings until groundbreaking for a new building was begun on April 7, 1963. In 1987 a newly updated sanctuary and activities building was built. The church remained in this building until it's closing in 2018. The church had the following ministers throughout it's history: Melton McNeill (1960-1969), William A. Tyson (1969-1971), Jim Scarborough (1971-1973), Bob Kerr (1973-1979), William Childers (1979-1980), Eugene Drinkard (1980-1982), Wiley Stephens (1982-1986), Ferrell Drummond (1986-1990), Max Well (1990-1994), John Whatley (1994-1997), Dean Kring (1997-1998), George Freeman (1998-2001), Wayne Johnson (2001-2003), Sondra Jones (2003- 2015) and Richard Puckett (2015-2018).

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of the records of Briarcliff United Methodist Church (Atlanta, Ga.) from it's founding to it's close in 2018. This includes administrative records such as reports, budgets, minutes, and planning (1960-2013), church bulletins and pamphlets (1960-2014), membership records (1960-2016), charge conference records (1960-2014), photographs (1960-2002), and scrapbooks created by the United Methodist women's group and others (1960-2014).
