Collection Description

Biographical Note

Martha Brown United Methodist Church (Atlanta, Ga.), was begun in 1892 in East Atlanta and was originally named East Atlanta Methodist Church. The congregation did not move into a permanent church building untill til 1898, where services were originally held once a month. In 1910 the church became a full time church with preaching every Sunday. In 1918 the church moved to a new brick building at it's long-time location on Moreland Avenue. The church name was changed the same year to honor the deceased wife of Mr. Brown. The church continued to grow over the years adding a parsonage, an educational unit, a choir room, and a church library. In 2014 Eastside United Methodist Church in Oakhurst, Decatur, Georgia moved into the Martha Brown United Methodist church location, merging the congregations and changing the name to Eastside UMC.
