Correspondence, 1854-1952
Boxes 1 - 18

Scope and Content Note

The series contains correspondence from 1854-1952. The series has been divided into three sections: Correspondence to Young John Allen, Correspondence from Young John Allen, and Other correspondence.

The first and largest section of correspondence contains letters received by Young John Allen and his wife Mary Houston Allen from 1854-1952. The correspondence includes letters with missionary organizations associated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, bishops, other missionaries stationed in China, and Chinese officials. There is also a large amount of personal correspondence from family members, admirers, and former students. Young John Allen's outgoing correspondence forms the second section of this series. These letters are primarily carbon copies and nearly illegible in some cases. This section, arranged chronologically, contains loose copies of correspondence and letterbooks kept by Young John Allen. Some missionary reports to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South are among the outgoing correspondence. Other reports may be found in Series 3: China Missions.

The third section of correspondence includes correspondence addressed to other family members from 1854-1952. Although Mary Houston Allen's incoming correspondence has been grouped with her husband's, letters received before their marriage in 1858 and her outgoing correspondence with the exception of letters addressed to Young John Allen are located in this section. Her correspondence includes letters with other family members in Georgia and her children. The correspondence to her husband prior to their marriage is especially rich, discussing their courtship and plans of missionary work. This section also includes a small amount of correspondence addressed to the Allen children and their spouses.

Mail registers kept by Young John Allen from 1882-1906, which details daily correspondence, are also located in this series. The mail registers include one kept by his daughter, Malvina Allen.
