Series 2
Writings, 1855-1906
Boxes 19 - 23

Scope and Content Note

This series contains unpublished diaries, notebooks, addresses, sermons, and writings by Young John Allen from 1855-1906. His diaries, kept from 1855-1898, chronicle daily activities at Emory College and his work as a missionary in China. Allen's notebooks contain class notes, ideas for speeches, and other scribbled and unorganized thoughts and musings. Allen's public addresses and sermons primarily consist of manuscript notes and incomplete outlines. His unpublished writings are primarily manuscript notes and drafts. The topics of his sermons, addresses, and unpublished writings mostly concern missionary activity in China. The series also includes unpublished manuscripts by others, including his wife Mary Houston Allen and George R. Loehr, Jr, Allen's grandson and fellow missionary. A writing by Yun Ch'i Ho of his missionary experiences and a biography of Young John Allen written by his daughter Malvina Allen Loehr are of particular interest.
