Scope and Content Note
This series consists of materials relating to unpublished (or not-yet-published) writing by and about, and illustrations by Benny Andrews. Correspondence and printed material, including book reviews and postcards, related to the writing and illustrations contained in this series are also included. Materials include drafts of Richard J. Gruber's manuscript, American Icons: From Madison to Manhattan, The Art of Benny Andrews, 1948-1997 and Lisa Ann Meyerowitz's dissertation, Exhibiting equality: Black-run museums and galleries in 1970s New York, page galleys for books Benny Andrews illustrated such as, Blind Sight, The Hickory Chair, Pictures for Miss Josie, and Sky Sash So Blue, and unpublished drafts of artist's statements for his "Bicentennial" and "Collage" exhibits.
