Custodial History

Ben Arnold was an Assistant Professor of Music at Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia) from 1987-2003 and wrote a book titled Music and War: A Research and Information Guide (1993). The collection is comprised of the materials he used to write that book. Once the bulk of the collection was received from Arnold, Director of Special Collections, Linda Matthews, solicited composers for materials to add to the collection with the intent of growing and sustaining it. Many of the gifts given by others from 1994-1997 were solicited by Arnold, Matthews, and Joyce Clinkscales, Music Librarian for the Robert W. Woodruff Library 1994-2016. Because these materials were received after the publication of Arnold's Music and War, he may not have used them for research for that book or any other publication.

Appraisal Note

Director of Special Collections Linda Matthews acquired the collection as part of the Rose Library's holdings music composed on the subject of war. Archivists have retained all material received with the collection.
