Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of John H. Ash from 1860-1917. The papers include twenty diaries (1860-1865), two letters, documents, notes, clippings, a review, and an essay relating to the 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry during and after the Civil War.

The diaries contain entries from February 18, 1860-February 24, 1865, with a few gaps. Another small volume contains "Sick Report, Company A, 5th Regt. Georgia Cavalry" with 10 pages of lists of sick men dated March 12, 1863-May 29, 1863.

Other materials include two letters to Ash, May 31, 1863 and March 25, 1870; 3 orders, one requiring the owners of dogs to remove them from Camp Vernon (May 11, 1862) and the other notifying each man to forage for his horse's feed (undated); a Special Order signed by Colonel R. H. Anderson giving" instructions for Orderly Sergeants whilst on the march" dated November 13, 1863; a list of men on furlough, September 2 - October 4, 1863; a parole, an oath of allegiance, a summons to military duty (February 6, 1861); an application for, and a permission for, leaves of absence and other miscellaneous notes.

Later materials include Ash's pencilled notes (11 pages) of the war record of Company B based on his diary written after the war at the request of Lt. Commander Sandy Duncan (Company A) who became the historian of the Georgia Hussars. Also includes lists of men and 12 clippings (1874-1917) of a biographical and historical nature.
