Collection Description

Biographical Note

Augustus Baxter was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1928. Baxter attended Morgan State College (Baltimore, Maryland) and was part of the college's national championship football team of 1949. He later received a degree in social work from Cheyney State University (Pennsylvania). In 1950, he married Dolores E. Hill Baxter. Through the 1950s and 1960s, Baxter worked as a community activist with the Gang Control Unit of the Friends Neighborhood Guild, a Quaker-founded social welfare agency, in Philadelphia. He later worked with various city planning organizations, including the Model Cities Program, the Philadelphia Housing Development Corporation, and the Philadelphia Architects Workshop. Baxter was a public school teacher in Philadelphia, and he served on the Board of Education for 12 years.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of Augustus and Dolores Hill Baxter from circa 1942-1957, including personal correspondence and photographs. The correspondence is primarily between Augustus and Dolores Hill Baxter during their courtship, while Baxter was in Baltimore, Maryland, attending Morgan State College.

The collection also contains two photographs of Baxter in his Morgan State College football uniform.
