Collection Description
Biographical Note
James Hamilton Baxter (March 26, 1848-October 1, 1891), Methodist minister, was born in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Admitted on trial to the North Georgia Conference in December 1868, he was ordained a Deacon in December 1870 and an Elder in 1871. He served, during the years of his ministry, the Watkinsville Circuit (1869) and Little River Circuit (1870-1871), both in the Athens District; Gainesville Station (1872-1873), Covington (1874), Greenville (1875), Newnan (1876-1877), Cartersville (1878), Dalton (1879), Elberton (1880-1882), Edgewood in the Atlanta District (1883), Marietta (1884-1885), Eatonton (1886), and as Presiding Elder of the Elberton District (1887-1890). At the time of his death he was Presiding Elder of the Augusta District. A contributor to church publications, he also wrote "Sanctification," a pamphlet published in 1886 (Macon, Ga.: J.W. Burke). During the last six years of his life (1885-1890), he served as Secretary of the North Georgia Conference. Baxter had married Fannie Thrasher of Clarke County, Georgia, on May 9, 1872. The couple had four children.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of outlines or notes for 24 apparently complete sermons and fragments, notes and partial outlines for approximately 75 others. There are six pages of a letter to an editor regarding "adults as scho[lars] in Sunday-schools," a brochure telling of his pamphlet "Sanctification," and other items relative to his work as a minister. There are also thirty folders of sermons and sermon notes and fragments and one folder of miscellaneous material.
