Collection Description

Historical Note

The John Birch Society is an American political advocacy group that was established in Indianapolis, Indiana, on December 9, 1958, by Robert Welch, Jr. (1899-1985), a retired candy manufacturer from Belmont, Massachusetts. The organization seeks to limit governmental powers and opposes collectivism, totalitarianism, socialism, fascism, and communism. It also opposes wealth redistribution and economic interventionism. The organization is named after a Baptist missionary and United States military intelligence officer who was killed in China in 1945. John Birch (1918-1945) is referred to by supporters of the society as the "first American victim of the Cold War." Birch's parents, George Birch (1892-1992) and Ethel Birch (1890-1977), were Christian missionaries who had John while serving in India. They returned to the United States in 1920 and moved, in 1934, to George's family home in Macon, Georgia. They were active members of the John Birch Society of Macon, Georgia.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains sound recordings collected by John Birch’s brother Ellis Birch, who was briefly a member the John Birch Society in Macon, Georgia, leaving the organization around 1963. He maintained an intellectual interest in the workings of the Society, as well as other conservative groups and activists, recording speeches and other material until 1971. Included in the collection are reel-to-reel tapes produced by the John Birch Society's public relations department; recordings of presentations, interviews, and speeches by members or on topics relevant to the organization's interests; and speeches by members of other conservative organizations including the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, Christian Crusade, the Congress of Freedom, and the Church League of America.
