Biographical Note

Black Fire Music was a record publishing company focusing on jazz and African American musicians founded by Richard Grey in Washington, D.C. in the 1970s. The firm closed in 1996.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of records related to Black Fire Music from 1973-1993. The collection includes album covers and layouts, photographs, and printed material. Album covers consist mostly of dust jackets and mock-ups for printing. Photographs are of African American musicians and illustrations for album covers. Printed material includes layouts for publications of Black Fire Music, printed catalogs from Black Fire Music, and collected fliers relating to musical events in Washington, D.C. The collection also includes a single undated letter from Jolynn Brooks and a subject file of clippings about John Coltrane.
