Scope and Content Note

The series consists of the papers of Julia W. Bond from 1921-2007 and includes personal papers; papers relating to the death and estate of Horace Mann Bond; professional papers; writings by Julia Bond; and writings by others. Personal papers contain diaries; financial and legal records, property records, and files relating to Julia Bond's education from high school in Nashville, Tennessee through her graduate studies at the Atlanta University School of Library and Information Studies. Personal papers also include files relating to community organizations and boards of which Bond was part, such as the Atlanta Neighborhood Housing Services Board of Directors and the Chautauqua Circle Club.

Materials relating to the death and estate of Horace Mann Bond include files relating to the placement of his papers at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as well as files documenting the microfilming and use of those papers by researchers. Also present are files relating to the posthumous publication of two works: Education for Freedom: A History of Lincoln University, Pennsylvania (1976) and The Star Creek Papers (1997), which Julia Bond also co-authored. Professional papers document Julia Bond's career as a teacher and librarian, particularly her time as a librarian working for Atlanta University, Spelman College, and the Atlanta University Center. Writings by Julia Bond include mostly short, biographical pieces, and writings by others include articles, essays, and poems sent to Julia, mostly about Horace Mann Bond.
