Series 3
Personal papers, 1942-1989
Boxes 78 - 89 and 99

Scope and Content Note

The series consists of Boozer's personal papers from 1942-1989, including files documenting his doctoral work and life before joining the Emory faculty, his work as a minister and a military chaplain, and his involvement with the community organization CAUTION, Inc. Boozer was a founding member of CAUTION, Inc. (Citizens Against Unnecessary Thoroughfares In Older Neighborhoods) and was involved with the organization from 1969-1988, including serving as president for a time. The organization opposed the building of the proposed Presidential Parkway through several Atlanta neighborhoods. The series contains materials related to the activities of CAUTION, Inc., the Druid Hills Civic Association, Emory University and its faculty, the Atlanta City Council, and other community organizations during the development of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and the proposed Presidential Parkway. Materials include correspondence; CAUTION, Inc. administrative materials; press releases; parkway planning materials; flyers and handouts; petitions created by Emory University faculty; legal documents; and meeting minutes of the various organizations. All materials in the collection related to the Presidential Parkway can be found in this series.

The series also contains other personal papers, including Boozer's doctoral dissertation on Paul Tillich and notes from his graduate school classes. Additionally, the series holds files related to marriage and memorial services Boozer performed outside of his function as the Emory University chaplain, including marriage services for his daughter and other family members and memorial services for colleagues' family members. There are also files documenting his placement as the minister of a Methodist Church in New Hampshire in the 1940s. In addition, the series contains files pertaining to Boozer's military service; of particular interest are records of his unit's activities during their deployment to Germany during World War II, including the mass murder of Nazi prisoners at Gardelegen, Germany.
