Subseries 1.2
Routes and ads, circa 1850-1975
Boxes 9 - 30

Scope and Content Note

Circus routes created by Brisendine, notes, and printouts from microfilm of advertisements for various kinds of entertainments. Brisendine culled this information primarily from city newspapers. For each circus or show, he listed the date and place for every performance he could document. Supplementing these lists are copies and transcriptions of advertising information and notes about particular performances. The focus is on Georgia, but the records also include major cities in other states that were visited by the circuses that he researched. See also the printed route books and cards found in Subseries 2.1.

Arrangement Note

There is a folder for each of the entertainments listed below, which are organized into eight different groups: (1) circuses, (2) vaudeville and variety shows, (3) dramatic repertory shows, (4) minstrel shows, (5) orchestras and bands, (6) research notes taken from The Billboard, (7) research notes taken from The New York Clipper, and (8) miscellaneous research notes and files. The material in each folder is organized as follows: (1) manuscript routes, (2) typescript routes, (3) notes, and (4) photocopies of advertisements.
