Scope and Content Note

The series contains Ed Bullins' published and unpublished writings from 1965 to 2009 and is comprised of play scripts, other writings, and notebooks.

The play script subseries (Subseries 2.1) includes play scripts written from 1965-2007, including traditional plays, musicals, one act plays, and screenplays. In addition to the play scripts, this subseries also contains correspondence and other administrative material, such as contracts, cast lists, and permissions relating to the production or publication of a given work.

The other writings subseries (Subseries 2.2) includes a variety of writings by Bullins, such as essays, children's stories, essays, novellas, poems, short stories, and speeches. The essays cover topics such as African American theater, the Black Arts Movement, and Bullins' early career in the theater.

The notebooks subseries (Subseries 2.3), spanning from early 1970 to 2003, consists of Bullins' notebooks which contain notes, poetry, sporadic journal entries, drafts of plays, lists, and personal musings. Of particular note is a series of typed journal entries that Bullins kept from 1975-1978, in which he chronicles the reception of his controversial play Jo Anne!!! and his thoughts on winning his second Obie from The Village Voice.
