Scope and Content Note

The printed material about Bullins subseries includes a variety of material relating to Bullins, his works, or other projects in which he was involved, from 1966-2000. Material relating to work by Bullins or works he directed, produced, or acted in includes reviews, tickets, playbills, and promotion and production materials related to plays. The collection documents the different productions of his plays over time, including multiple stagings of The Taking of Miss Janie, The Electronic Nigger, and The Fabulous Miss Marie, among others. Also included are promotional materials for Bullins' novel, The Reluctant Rapist, and those for an unproduced film, The Huge Hunk of Funk, to be written and directed by Bullins. All works are by Bullins, unless noted otherwise.

The subseries also includes newspaper articles, directories, press releases, flyers and programs from 1966-2010, such as material relating to Bullins' role in African-American theater, summaries of his work at different stages of his career, award ceremonies and speaking events at various universities. Related figures covered include Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Brother Wayne Grice, and Woodie King, Jr. Strengths of the subseries include material documenting his speaking and teaching engagements, his general participation in New York and Boston culture, and critical analysis of his creative work, beginning with an early, dismissive review of Bullins by The Los Angeles Times.
